But while Joseph was there in prison, the Lord was with him.
—  Genesis 39:21

Wow. The story of Joseph is amazing. What a comeback! From a pit to a prison to a person of great power in the palace of the king!

Joseph faced a lot of tough setbacks in his life. But as you read through his story recorded for us in Genesis, you see one clear truth woven throughout his whole life. You read this truth over and over as you read his life story. “The Lord was with him.” In the end, that made all the difference for Joseph. That truth can make all the difference for us as well. One other thing needs to be mentioned here that is also very important. God was not only with Joseph, but Joseph was aware of God’s presence. That was the secret to Joseph’s eventual come-from-behind victory.

For most of this story, Joseph was not where he wanted to be. He had been mistreated by his family. He was sold out for money. He was punished for doing the right thing. He was forgotten by people he had helped. He was in prison. But Joseph prospered in all of these situations with his God’s help.

Joseph did not need a new circumstance to receive the blessings of God. He did not really need a new location. God used him in great ways where he was. And then, one day, a big victory came Joseph’s way.

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”
— Genesis 41: 41

Wow. What a comeback. From a pit to the palace.

I see three truths here that can benefit us all. If you are a child of God saved by his grace…

  • God is with you where you are.
  • God can bless you where you are.
  • God can use you to help others where you are.

If you have not asked God to forgive and save you, do it now. He can save, help and bless you today, wherever you are.
