Read: 2 Corinthians 9:7
A few years back I got a call from a family in desperate need. Their mother had fallen seriously ill, and they lived far out in the country. They were worried I wouldn’t make the drive, but I assured them I’d be there. I met with their mother spent time praying with her, and, sadly, she passed away shortly after. The following week, I had the honor of officiating her funeral.
The family was so grateful and wanted to give me something in return. They didn’t have much money, but they baked me a homemade pie and gifted me a basket of vegetables from their garden. It was probably one of the most honest and joyful gifts I’ve ever received. They gave what they had, and it was filled with love and gratitude—it was clear that their hearts were fully in it.
Reflecting on this reminds me of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” True giving isn’t about the value of the gift; it’s about the heart behind it. God values a cheerful giver, someone who gives out of love rather than obligation.
Our giving, whether through finances, time, or resources, reflects our trust in God and our gratitude for what He has done for us. Just as that family’s simple gift meant so much because of the love behind it, our gifts to God, however small, bring Him joy when they are given with a cheerful heart. Giving, then, becomes an act of worship, an expression of our relationship with God.
Reflection Questions:
- How do you feel when you give? Is it joyful, reluctant, or somewhere in between?
- What might change if you approached giving as an act of worship?
- How can you cultivate a cheerful heart in your acts of generosity?
