Read: 1 Thessalonians 4:11, 2 Thessalonians 3:11-13
My least favorite part of posting anything online is all the unsolicited advice that strangers are ready to give you. Let’s be honest: all unsolicited advice is criticism—or at least it feels that way. If you’re not careful, you can start to feel overwhelmed by the opinions and expectations of total strangers. Ironically, posting a clever comment on someone else’s post is my favorite thing to do. I recognize the hypocrisy, but I justify it by telling myself that at least my comments are funny.
It’s crazy to think that in today’s interconnected world, my friends and I will have conversations about the drama of total strangers. Unfortunately, it’s easy to get caught up in the drama of others’ lives and neglect our own responsibilities in the process (midnight TikTok scrollers, I see you). We are all becoming a bunch of online busybodies.
Paul addresses this issue directly, encouraging the Thessalonians to mind their own affairs and work diligently. This advice is especially relevant in a culture that often values gossip and meddling over personal responsibility.
In 2 Thessalonians 3:11–13, Paul reiterates the importance of working quietly and earning one’s living, urging believers not to grow weary in doing good. This mindset helps us focus on our own growth and contribution rather than getting distracted by others’ actions.
Reflect on areas where you might be too involved in others’ affairs. Consider how you can refocus your energy on your own responsibilities and personal growth, contributing positively to your community and honoring God through your work.
Questions for Reflection:
- Are there areas in your life where you are overly concerned with others’ affairs?
- How can you focus more on your own responsibilities and personal growth?
- In what ways can you contribute positively to your community through diligent work?
