Read: 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, Galatians 1:10
I hate being the odd man out. Unfortunately, It happens a lot because I am naturally socially awkward. When I find myself around groups of people, I coach myself and try and be charming. This has never worked for me. if you’re awkward, you know that getting in your head about it only makes things worse! The more I try to please others, the more I lose sight of who I truly am.
Paul makes it clear that the Thessalonians’ message and ministry were not about pleasing people but pleasing God. This focus is crucial because seeking man’s approval can trap us in a cycle of superficiality and compromise.
In Galatians 1:10, Paul reiterates that seeking to please man is incompatible with being a servant of Christ. Our primary allegiance must be to God, whose approval and glory should be our ultimate aim. This commitment requires boldness and courage, especially when facing opposition and conflict.
Paul also urges the Thessalonians to aspire to live quietly, mind their own affairs, and work with their hands. This advice may seem counterintuitive in a world that often values noise and recognition, but it reflects a deeper wisdom about living a life that truly pleases God.
Reflect on areas of your life where you might be seeking the approval of others instead of God. Consider how you can reorient your focus and actions to please God, knowing that He is the one who ultimately tests our hearts.
Questions for Reflection:
- Are there areas in your life where you seek human approval over God’s?
- How can you develop a mindset that prioritizes pleasing God above all else?
- What changes can you make to align your actions with a God-pleasing orientation?
