Read: Matthew 7:13-14
When I was a kid, I remember playing video games with my friends, each of us trying to avoid the “Game Over” screen. We’d give it everything we had, knowing that once that screen appeared, there were no more chances—it was final. Life, in many ways, is similar—but with far greater consequences. We live in a world where many believe they are on the right path, where it’s easy to assume that heaven is the default destination for all. But Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 remind us that the truth is far more sobering.
Hell is not a popular topic in today’s culture. People are more comfortable avoiding it or assuming that only the “worst of the worst” go there. But Scripture teaches us that hell is a real place—a destination reserved not only for the extremely wicked but for all who choose to reject God’s grace and path of life. Jesus Himself, the embodiment of love, spoke about hell more than anyone else—not to scare us, but to motivate us toward eternal life with God. In Matthew 7, He emphasizes the narrowness of the way to life and the fact that few will choose it.
Why is the gate to life narrow? Because it requires us to make a choice—a choice to follow Christ, deny ourselves, and embrace the path He has set before us. This is not a path of convenience or ease but one of surrender and trust. Many people prefer the broad road, where comfort, self-interest, and momentary pleasures reign supreme. But Jesus tells us that road leads to destruction.
This reality should not only sober us but also stir us with urgency. Just as we wouldn’t allow a loved one to head toward danger without warning, we too should feel compelled to share the truth about hell and the love of God with others. God doesn’t desire for anyone to perish; His heart is that all would come to repentance and find life through Jesus (2 Peter 3:9). But the choice is ours to make and to share.
Reflection Questions:
- How does the reality of hell challenge your understanding of eternity?
- Are there areas of your life where you’ve chosen the broader, easier path over the narrow one Jesus calls us to?
- Who in your life needs to hear the truth about God’s grace and the reality of hell, and how can you share that with them?
