In the ‘90s, the hottest trend in popular Christian culture was the WWJD bracelet. These things were everywhere. The WWJD bracelets were intended to provoke thought and reflection among wearers, encouraging them to consider their actions in light of Jesus’s example. Though they’re not as popular today, the question “What would Jesus do?” is still a powerful guide for making decisions in life.
It’s a great sentiment, but let’s be honest—sometimes, when we ask, “What would Jesus do?” it feels abstract or disconnected from our everyday challenges. After all, Jesus was a first-century Jewish rabbi, and we live in a very different world. How can we faithfully follow His example when our lives look so different from His?
The truth is, Jesus’ character and teachings are timeless. While our circumstances might be different, the heart of how He lived—His love, humility, obedience to God, and dedication to truth—remains relevant no matter what we face. The question isn’t about tailoring Jesus’ teachings to fit our preferences, but about consistently applying His example in every aspect of our lives.
Being like Jesus isn’t about picking and choosing which parts of His life and teachings to follow based on what feels convenient or relevant. It’s about letting His character shape every part of who we are, in every situation, no matter how challenging or uncomfortable it might be. The call to “walk as Jesus walked” means surrendering our own desires and conforming to the truth of God’s Word. It’s a call to live with integrity, consistency, and faithfulness in all areas of life.
Jesus didn’t just show us a set of principles; He demonstrated how to live in complete obedience to God. Following Jesus means taking on His mindset in every situation—choosing humility, love, and servanthood, even when it’s hard. This isn’t a pick-and-choose lifestyle; it’s a daily commitment to live in a way that reflects Christ’s unchanging truth.
Questions for Reflection:
- In what areas of your life do you struggle to fully live out the teachings of Jesus?
- How can you consistently apply the character of Christ to every situation you face?
- What does it look like to choose humility, love, and obedience in the specific challenges you’re facing right now?
