Read: Proverbs 3:9-10
When I was a teenager, my pastor gave a sermon about tithing and the blessings of giving our “firstfruits” to God. I remember feeling so moved by the idea of putting God first, but I didn’t have any money to give. So after the service, I asked my pastor what I should do. He smiled and said, “You can still give God your firstfruits by giving Him the first of your time.” Then he challenged me to do it every day for six weeks.
At first, setting aside the first part of my day felt strange, but I quickly realized how that time with God changed my perspective and grounded me. Giving Him the “first” of my day wasn’t just a routine; it was an act of faith, a way of saying, “I trust You with the rest.”
This principle of firstfruits, as Proverbs 3:9–10 encourages, means honoring God with our best, trusting Him to provide the rest. In ancient Israel, they gave the first and finest portion of their harvest as a sign of trust in God’s provision. Today, this principle remains relevant, whether we’re giving our time, our finances, or other resources.
When we put God first in any area of our lives, we acknowledge that He is our provider. Firstfruits giving isn’t about giving what’s leftover; it’s about beginning with God at the center. It’s an invitation to live by faith, trusting that He will meet our needs in every season.
