Read: Exodus 20:3, Psalm 95:6

While I was on sabbatical, I had the chance to sail down the West Coast. One of the most unforgettable parts of that journey was passing Big Sur. I saw waves crashing against towering cliffs, ocean mist hanging in the air, and mountains rising straight out of the sea. The scenes were so stunning they took my breath away. I didn’t have to think about how to respond. My heart was in awe of a God who could create such wonder. I just said, “Wow.” In that moment, my soul worshiped.

Worship is our natural response to something overwhelmingly beautiful, powerful, or true. God hardwired us to react when we witness greatness. We clap at concerts, cry during weddings, and cheer when our team wins. Those moments stir something deep inside us because we were made to respond. And God, the Creator of all beauty and goodness, is the One most deserving of that response.

In Exodus 20, the very first commandment God gives His people is this: don’t worship anyone or anything else. That’s not just a rule. It’s a rescue. God knows we are worshiping creatures. If we don’t worship Him, we’ll give our affection and attention to lesser things. And those things — whether it’s success, approval, comfort, or control — can never satisfy the longing inside of us.

Psalm 95 gives us an invitation: bow down, kneel, and worship the Lord our Maker. Not because He needs it, but because we do. Worship isn’t just singing. It’s the way we live our lives in response to who God is and what He’s done. When we see His goodness, we’re moved to gratitude. When we remember His faithfulness, we find peace. When we sit in His presence, we feel joy. Worship recalibrates our hearts.

So today, don’t rush past the beauty around you. Pause. Breathe. Let your heart respond to God. Whether you’re staring at mountains or stuck in traffic, He is worthy of worship.
