Read: Acts 4:13, Matthew 28:19

As a kid, I loved building Rube Goldberg machines—those complex setups where one small action, like knocking over a domino, sets off a chain reaction that leads to something extraordinary. I’d spend hours arranging marbles, levers, and pulleys, thrilled by the way one tiny movement could start a series of events that unfolded with precision and impact.

In many ways, Jesus’ life and ministry function like the greatest Rube Goldberg machine ever set in motion. He began with a single act of stepping into our world as a humble servant. Then, He called twelve ordinary men—fishermen, tax collectors, and others with no impressive résumés. Despite their ordinariness, their lives were so transformed by being with Jesus that they became the foundation of a movement that continues to change the world.

The most remarkable thing is that this chain reaction didn’t stop with them—it continues with us. As believers, we are part of the ongoing ripple of Jesus’ work. Every word of kindness, every moment of courage, and every faithful act of obedience adds to the unfolding impact of God’s kingdom. Like the pieces of a Rube Goldberg machine, our seemingly small actions can set off a chain reaction of love, grace, and transformation in the lives of those around us.

You might feel ordinary like your part doesn’t matter much, but remember this: the same Spirit that empowered Peter and John is alive in you. Their courage and faith were not because of their abilities but because they had been with Jesus. The same is true for us. The power of Jesus working in us can create a ripple effect far greater than we can imagine.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How has your life been impacted by the ongoing “chain reaction” of Jesus’ work in the world?
  2. What small action of faith or obedience can you take today, trusting God to multiply its impact?
  3. How can you intentionally live in a way that creates a ripple effect of grace and love in your community?
