Family Legacy focuses on evangelism and discipleship through the holistic care of vulnerable and orphaned children in Lusaka. Programs such as Legacy Academy schools, the Tree of Life Children’s Village, and Camp Life provide life-changing opportunities for children to receive quality education while also encountering the love of Christ. Mission teams serve most directly through Camp Life—a week-long, VBS-style experience that introduces children to school and the hope of the Gospel. Guests participate by leading a group of 10 children in devotionals, worship, and prepared activities meant to encourage and teach both children and Zambian partners. The relationships formed during these moments are powerful, opening hearts to the message of Jesus and planting seeds of hope for a brighter future.

Family Legacy has been serving in Zambia since 2001, with a mission to empower vulnerable children to live out their God-given potential. Our 700+ Zambian staff members serve faithfully every day, discipling, educating, and caring for more than 10,000 children across Lusaka. Fellow c|Life members Andrew and Cynthia Knight have also faithfully served with Family Legacy for over 15 years, helping guide and support mission teams as they step into the work God is doing in Zambia. Together, staff and mission partners create lasting impact that transforms lives and communities for Christ.

Culture

Zambia is a nation where Christianity is widely professed, yet poverty, broken families, and limited access to education deeply affect children’s lives. Lusaka is home to many vulnerable communities where children often face neglect, hunger, and a lack of opportunity. Despite these challenges, Zambians are known for their warmth, hospitality, and strong sense of community.

Eating & Sleeping

Mission teams are housed in safe, comfortable accommodations at the Legacy Resort, just outside the capital city of Lusaka. Kitchens are stocked with basic breakfast items, and participants are encouraged to bring along supplemental snacks or breakfast foods if desired. Lunch during Camp is a long-standing tradition—peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a simple yet nostalgic favorite that fuels both kids and leaders alike. Dinner is provided each evening, and secure transportation is arranged to and from all ministry sites.

Safety

Family Legacy prioritizes the safety of every mission participant. While Lusaka is generally safe for visitors, teams are expected to follow guidelines, remain with their group, and respect curfews and boundaries set by staff. We do not allow participants to enter unsafe areas, and staff carefully monitor conditions on the ground. By following these protocols, teams can focus on ministry while maintaining peace of mind.

Adventure

Beyond ministry, Zambia offers unique cultural and natural beauty. For those who wish to extend their trip, Zambia is home to world-famous Victoria Falls and some of Africa’s most renowned safari parks, offering opportunities to see God’s creation in breathtaking ways. Family Legacy works with a travel agency to help book any additional excursions you may want to experience before or after your trip.

Who Should Go

This is a family-friendly and multi-generational trip, welcoming singles, couples, and families alike. Children ages 10 and older can even lead their own groups, giving them the unique opportunity to live out their faith and engage in mission firsthand. Mission teams serve most effectively when participants are flexible and willing to meet needs as they arise. Whether through teaching, music, play, or simply building relationships, everyone has a role to play. Above all, the greatest qualifications are humility and a willingness to walk alongside children living in poverty, sharing Christ’s love in word and action.

Spiritual Formation

Before the trip, participants prepare through prayer, devotionals, and resources provided by Family Legacy, focusing on the Camp Life theme, identity in Christ, and a readiness to serve. Pre-Camp devotionals help set the stage spiritually, ensuring team members arrive ready to pour into the children. During Camp, participants also follow along with daily devotionals that mirror the main teaching the children receive in their big group sessions, allowing leaders to engage more deeply and reinforce the Gospel truths being shared. In the evenings, teams gather for reflection and connection during Villa Time, a space to process the day, encourage one another, and celebrate what God is doing.

FAQ

Do I need to get any vaccines? We recommend following the CDC Travel Guidelines for Ghana outlined here: Ghana | Travelers’ Health. Please consult with your doctor to ensure you are up to date on all routine vaccines and follow any guidelines related to your specific health needs. We will submit to the requirements of both the USA and Ghana so please make sure you are aware of and comfortable with the requirements before submitting a deposit. *Ghana requires the yellow fever vaccine.* *It is strongly recommended to take malaria medication while in the country.*

How much spending money should I bring? Personal preference! You will be responsible to pay for souvenirs, food in the airport, and food while out on excursions or at a market.

What is the travel itinerary? Flight information will be released as soon as flights are booked. Anyone who is registered will be notified immediately if there are any necessary date changes due to flights.

What is the daily itinerary while in country? Daily itineraries will be finalized closer to the trip date and will be provided at one of the pre-trip meetings.

What should I pack? Don’t worry! Packing lists of required/recommended items will be provided prior to your trip.

Can you give me some fundraising tips? Yes! We understand this is a big commitment and we are here to help. We will provide tips and guidance after you have completed the registration process. Our biggest request is that you communicate with us early and often and at the first sign you may not be able to meet a funding milestone.
