Outreach

Osaka International Baptist Church focuses on evangelism and discipleship through ministries like their English Café and Salt & Light English School. These programs build relationships with non-believers, providing opportunities to share the Gospel and invite them to church. Mission teams can serve in the church by leading worship, sharing testimonies, and connecting with attendees. Mission teams are wonderful for the English Café ministry as it is helpful for Japanese people to interact with native English speakers in a welcoming environment.

Ministry Partners

Johan and Haruko Strydom began their ministry in Osaka in August 2023, and God has powerfully used it to impact many lives. Serving full-time in Takatsuki, Osaka, they focus on evangelism and discipling new believers in the Word of God. Both hold Masters degrees in Bible and Theology, with years of ministry experience, and serve out of a deep love for God and people.

Culture

Japan has about 0.3% evangelical Christians, with many cults present, making it the second-largest unreached nation in the world. Buddhism and Shintoism are deeply ingrained in the culture, and most Japanese view these practices as cultural rather than religious. Religion, especially Christianity, is often seen in a negative light and as foreign, leading to widespread disinterest. Though the Japanese are humble, kind, and respectful, they are also reserved and private, making relationship-building and trust essential in ministry efforts.

Eating & Sleeping

Japan is a modern first-world country, known for its excellent food and accommodation options. In our city, hotels are conveniently located within walking distance of our ministries. Public transportation is efficient, making it easy to travel to ministry locations or sightseeing spots. There is a wide variety of foods to suit all tastes, and compared to the US, both food and accommodation are very affordable.

Safety

Japan is considered one of the safest countries in the world. However, in popular tourist areas like Kyoto, where there are many foreigners, it’s advisable to exercise caution as theft can occasionally occur. Community Life Church values the safety of our trip participants. A designated curfew is mandatory for all participants. We strictly prohibit travel into potentially dangerous areas and closely monitor any threats. Non-compliance with safety rules may result in early departure at the participant’s expense.

Adventure

Japan is a popular tourist destination, offering a blend of history and modern attractions. Visitors can explore ancient shrines, temples, castles, and museums that showcase Japan’s cultural heritage. In contrast, there are also impressive skyscrapers, aquariums, and markets. From traditional tea gardens to the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, Japan provides diverse experiences for tourists. Whether seeking historical landmarks or modern attractions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Who Should Go

We welcome anyone with a heart to share the love of Jesus. While we aim to utilize your specific skills, we also ask that you be open to serving wherever needed. Translators are available to assist with communication. Depending on the mission team’s focus, those with experience in working with children, teaching English, playing musical instruments, singing, or using sports as an outreach can be especially helpful. Humble, kind individuals with strong people skills thrive in Japan’s culture, where building relationships is key to ministry success.

Spiritual Formation

Before the trip, team members prepare through spiritual meetings, devotionals, and readings. All of these focus on their identity in Christ, sharing the Gospel, and deepening their relationship with Him. After the mission, there is time for reflection on what God accomplished and taught during the experience.

FAQ

Do I need to get any vaccines? We recommend following the CDC Travel Guidelines for Japan outlined here: Japan | Traveler’s Health. Please consult with your doctor to ensure you are up to date on all routine vaccines and follow any guidelines related to your specific health needs.

How much spending money should I bring? Personal preference! You will be responsible to pay for souvenirs, food in the airport, and food while out on excursions or at a market.

What is the travel itinerary? Flight information will be released as soon as flights are booked. Anyone who is registered will be notified immediately if there are any necessary date changes due to flights.

What is the daily itinerary while in country? Daily itineraries will be finalized closer to the trip date and will be provided at one of the pre-trip meetings.

What should I pack? Don’t worry! Packing lists of required/recommended items will be provided prior to your trip.

Can you give me some fundraising tips? Yes! We understand this is a big commitment and we are here to help. We will provide tips and guidance after you have completed the registration process. Our biggest request is that you communicate with us early and often and at the first sign you may not be able to meet a funding milestone.

Pray for Ma-san. That our conversations on faith would plant a seed that will grow into a flower of faith.
Pray for Little Light Church to raise the funds we need for a permanent worship location.
Pray for ministry partner’s pastor, Josiah Henderson, and his wife Noel. They are pregnant with their 4th child and the miscarriage risk is extremely high. Noel is on bedrest and prayers for the child’s safety are greatly appreciated.
