“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
— John 14:1-6
Remember back in the dark ages, when you set out for a destination, and you had to know the directions before you left the house? And if you happened to take a wrong turn or two, you were out of luck! You may have even had to resort to pulling into a gas station to ask for directions!
It’s an uncomfortable, perhaps even scary, feeling to have a desired destination in mind, but not know how to get there. In John 13 and 14, Jesus tells his disciples that he will soon be leaving them in order to prepare a place for them, and the disciples don’t like the sound of that. They ask Jesus where he will be going, and he tells them, “You know the way.” And Thomas pipes up and says, “No, we don’t!” (You have to love his boldness.) The disciples are all wound up at the thought of not being able to find the way to the Father’s house, this place where Jesus is going to prepare a place for them.
Jesus speaks to the fears of his disciples, saying, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Jesus is communicating to his disciples, “Don’t be troubled! Don’t be anxious! You know the way! There’s not a secret knock or secret password! I am the way, the truth, and the life! If you know me, you know the way!”
Do you feel lost in your soul? Do you feel disconnected from God? Are you uncertain about where you will spend eternity? Today, you can be rid of all of the anxiety and doubt that comes along with that. Jesus is the way, truth, and life that you are looking for. Acts 2:21 says, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, will be saved.” If you feel lost, cry out to Jesus, and he will come and find you and save you! Don’t be troubled, cry out to Jesus! He’s the way!
