Get Baptized

What is baptism?

Baptism is an ordinance prescribed in the Bible by Jesus Christ as a visible symbol and reminder of God's grace.

Baptism doesn’t save a person. It's merely an outward affirmation of the inward reality that salvation has already taken place, by grace alone, through faith in Jesus Christ as lord of our lives. It's an occasion for us to remember God's goodness and grace, especially as revealed through the person and work of Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
— Ephesians 2:8-9

Being submerged in the water symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, as well as our own death to sin and old way of life. Being raised out of the water represents how Jesus raised us and gave us a fresh start in life.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
— Galatians 2:20

Why should a person be baptized?

We believe that a new believer should be baptized for three specific reasons:

  1. To obey the command of Christ.
  2. To demonstrate that he or she is a disciple of Christ.
  3. To follow the example of Christ himself.

The desire to be baptized should come from the desire to glorify God in faithful obedience. Any other motivation, such as pleasing a friend or family member, or just trying to be a good example, should not be the ultimate reason for seeking baptism.

Who should be baptized?

Since baptism is an outward expression of faith, it's only for believers. At c|Life, we practice what is called believer's baptism, which means we only baptize those who believe and confess Jesus Christ as their lord and savior.

When should a person be baptized?

As soon as a person trusts Christ, he or she should be baptized. At c|Life, we ask believers who wish to be baptized to wait for the next scheduled baptism service. This gives them an opportunity to invite friends and family to share in the joy of obedience to Christ.
