Friendship

Read Genesis 2:18, John 15:12–17 and John 13:35

So far, we have talked about the two big things that damage our relationships with people. Today we are making a shift and will begin praying about specific types of relationships. You may never have realized this, but the first problem that faces humanity in Genesis is not sin but Adams’s solitude. It’s interesting that, during creation, God says, “It is good,” over and over, but in Genesis 2:18, he says it is not good for man to be alone.

Isolation is bad for you, and God shows us the importance of community by creating it for Adam. And even more than that, Jesus teaches us that the ultimate expression of friendship is love, and the ultimate expression of love is sacrifice. Jesus calls us friends, and in doing so, teaches us that friendship is more than just a nice thing to have but a sacred gift from God.

Today we are praying that God restores our community. We are praying for friends. If you have lost touch with friends, today is the day to start reaching out. Start building those sacred connections that are so vital to our souls.

Prayer:

Father, thank you for the gift of friendship. The past few years have been difficult because circumstances have caused us to walk away from relationships and human contact. Today, help us to be good friends and love those around us. Help us reach out to those with whom we have shared community in the past and begin rebuilding those vital connections. Thank you for loving us and for providing all that we need. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
