The Best is Yet to Come

What else can we learn from Jesus’ first miracle and from all of God’s work?

The servants filled the pots with water, but in the pouring-out process, the water turned into the finest of wines. We may benefit when God performs a miracle, but His purpose in every miracle is to make Himself known.

What did turning water into wine signify about Jesus?

First, let’s remember that wine is a symbol of joy. Wine is also considered to be a representation of the Holy Spirit.

Here’s where things get really interesting. Hebrews 9:22 tells us that according to the law, forgiveness can only be given when there is shedding of blood. In Luke 22:20, Jesus uses wine to symbolize His blood. That sounds a little strange at first. But here’s what it meant: Jesus was referring to sacrificing His life (spilling His blood) so that we might have eternal life with Him!

Interestingly, the juice of a grape is called the blood of the grape (see Deuteronomy 32:14). Coincidence? Not a chance! In the Old Testament, the water in the Nile River that turned to blood represented God’s judgment, whereas in the New Testament, blood is the means of God’s grace.

Are you seeing what Jesus was subtly, but loudly proclaiming? The miracle of water turning to wine was Jesus’ way of proclaiming a new day was dawning! A new and better covenant was on the horizon that would bring a permanent cleansing.

The wine was filled to the brim, more than enough, and a free gift! The wine was part of a celebration. The wine was a pure act of love, grace, and generosity!

Consider:
How can today’s lesson impact your daily life?

Prayer:
Jesus, You are my joy and salvation! Thank You for taking my mess and making a masterpiece. I praise You, holy Father, because You did what I could never do for myself. Holy Spirit, fill me up to the brim! You provided a way that was more than enough for my salvation and freedom. I praise You for washing me totally clean by Your blood. Because of You alone I am forgiven, pure, and blameless!
