“…Let not your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
— John 14:27

Do you think we will ever see this headline in our newspaper? “Only Good News to Report Today!” The obvious answer to that question is no. Problems and fears are a consistent part of all of our lives. Some people handle these issues successfully. Others do not.

The Word is filled with good examples of God’s people who showed courage and confidence, even in the face of problems. Caleb is one of those. Let’s look today at the qualities he had in his life that led to his success.

You remember the story. When Moses sent the 12 spies into Canaan to bring back a report to the people, Caleb was among them. He and Joshua were excited upon their return. They had seen a great land and opportunity, and they knew that their God was with them and would help them succeed. The other 10 saw the problems and the dangers. The 10 outvoted the two. The 10 saw their weaknesses. Caleb saw and was focused on his God’s strength.

The assembled people were afraid and followed the advice of the 10. However, God took notice of Caleb’s courage and faith:

“But my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land and his descendants will inherit it.”
— Numbers 14:24

None of the ones who doubted their God and his leadership ever went into the promised land, but Joshua and Caleb did. They had a “different spirit.” Their faith and focus on their God led them to be strong, courageous and victorious. It was God who gave Caleb his strength and courage. He is ready still today to empower his people to live fearless and courageous lives.

It is obvious that God was proud of Caleb. The Word tells us why. God noted that Caleb “followed me wholeheartedly.” We would do well to do the same. Let’s have a God-focused courage today.

If you have not made the decision to become a follower of Christ, do it today. He can supply you with the strength and courage you need.
